Ceylon Black Tea

錫蘭韻香

Ceylon is the old island name that tea still uses, even though the country has been Sri Lanka since 1972. 錫蘭韻香 in the catalog is a floral-fruit black tea with rounded sweetness—familiar milk-tea comfort, cleaner than a heavy Assam, brighter than Yunnan red.

In the cup

Floral fruit, rounded sweetness, a smooth finish. It is the black tea for people who want a café milk tea they already understand, with a cleaner aftertaste than a generic “black tea base.”

This is a classic milk-tea black. It should stay fragrant rather than go flat or tannic.

An island that became a tea brand

Commercial tea planting in Ceylon took off in the nineteenth century after coffee estates failed. The island’s trade name stuck because the teas were distinctive: bright liquor, lively aroma, and a range of styles that follow altitude more than a single factory recipe.

Growers still talk in three bands. High-grown teas (Nuwara Eliya and neighbors) are lighter and more fragrant. Mid-grown teas, including Kandy, are rounder and easy in milk. Low-grown teas (Ruhuna, Sabaragamuwa) are thicker, darker, and built for milk and sugar. Uva, on the east, is known for a seasonal, almost minty high note. We do not assign this lot to one of those districts. The catalog only says Sri Lanka, arbor large-leaf, black tea — Ceylon.

Orthodox or CTC, always fully oxidized

Ceylon black tea is fully oxidized. Estates may make orthodox leaf or crush-tear-curl (CTC) grain. Milk-tea factories often want a grade that infuses quickly, runs red-amber, and keeps a floral-fruit top note so the drink does not taste only like milk.

The catalog lists 錫蘭韻香 / Fresh Ceylon with aroma of flower and fruit plus sweetness, and a mellow, sweet, smooth taste. A sister SKU, 萬里木蘭, is also Ceylon, with a slightly fresher, smoother tasting note. Ours is the 韻香 line: perfume and roundness, not a smoky breakfast tea.
