Jin Xuan Milk Oolong

金萱烏龍

TTES No. 12 · 台茶12號 · 27仔

Jin Xuan is a tea-plant cultivar, not a syrup. It is famous for a soft milky sweetness that can show up in the leaf itself. In a milk tea it feels plush rather than heavy—the reason it sits in the Discovery Kit as the creamy oolong.

  • soft milk aroma
  • gentle florals
  • smooth finish
In the cup

Soft milk aroma, gentle florals, a smooth finish. It is the cup to pull when you want the milk tea to feel silky without leaning on a dark roast.

Dairy makes the cultivar’s creaminess read as texture. It does not need much sugar.

A numbered tea with a grandmother’s name

Jin Xuan is Taiwan Tea Experiment Station cultivar No. 12 (台茶12號). It was bred by the tea research station and named in 1981. The parents are Yingzhi Hongxin (硬枝紅心) and Tainong No. 8 (台農8號). The experimental code was 2027, which is why Taiwanese farmers still call it 27仔.

The pretty name is not marketing copy from a café. Wu Zhentuo (吳振鐸), the station’s first director and the breeder most associated with the line, named it after his grandmother, 金萱. The plant is vigorous, relatively disease-tolerant, and higher-yielding than older cultivars such as Qingxin Oolong, which is why it spread quickly through Nantou and Chiayi, including Alishan-area gardens, and later into other Chinese tea districts.

Milk aroma: cultivar, craft, or flavoring

A well-made Jin Xuan oolong is usually a ball-rolled Taiwanese-style oolong: wither, shake to bruise the leaf edge, partial oxidation, kill-green, roll, and a light bake. When the cultivar and the withering are right, people describe a gentle milk-candy or condensed-milk sweetness, with florals rather than a hit of cream from a bottle.

That natural note is easy to fake. A lot of “milk oolong” sold for milk tea is a cheaper green or oolong with added milk flavor. Genuine cultivar aroma tends to be quiet, more obvious in later infusions, and not like opening a milk-powder tin. CHAURA uses Jin Xuan as a milk-oolong direction: soft, floral, and plush in milk.
